openSUSE Goblin Team released Smeegol 1.0, their first edition with the MeeGo UI.

More information about the release you can find at http://news.opensuse.org/2010/10/06/announcing-smeegol-1-0/

I always tried to give MeeGo a try on a netbook with Nvidia ION accelerated graphics but MeeGo doesn’t support that so far. MeeGo forums member vljn posted about a workaround to install MeeGo on Nvidia hardware but that never worked for me.

Yesterday I gave openSUSE Smeegol 1.0 a try and I was suprised that it booted without a flaw into the livemode and after I installed it worked without any graphic problems. The MyZone was still broken and I could not get any G3 or WLAN connection, so I plugged in my LAN cable and tried to update. For any reason the Update Manager broke with “Untrusted Keyring” so I started to update in terminal with …

sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper dup

After the update I tried to reboot and wondered “Where the h… is the reboot button?”. I did not found yet So i pressed the turn off key on my netbook. After new boot the MyZone was shown but still no wireless connection possible.

I am suprised why openSUSE Smeegol 1.0 works with Nvidia like a flaw and why MeeGo does not. If someone is willing to explain to me that would be cool
But so far thank you openSUSE for your work.

I recently got problems with any music players on my netbook, in that case a Lenovo S12 ION.
The problem is that pulseaudio eating so much cpu power that playback stutters almost every 3-5 secs.

So I removed pulseaudio and voila, playback with alsa is smooth and with a special ppa I still can use my multimedia keys for volume-settings.

Remove pulseaudio package (it will remove some metapackages too, don’t wonder)

sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio -y && sudo apt-get autoremove -y

Now add PPA and upgrade

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dtl131/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Now reboot and enjoy stutterfree music playback you your (net||note)&&book

I recently got an error while apt-get updating.
Exec format error : package failed to install/remove : installation/removal script returned error exit status 2
This was caused by a broken package, broken by a system crash while updating.

Here are two easy ways to fix it:

Way A: Remove the package and reinstall where PACKAGE == your broken package

$ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/PACKAGE_VERSION.p*
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge PACKAGE
$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo apt-get update

It will remove the broken package info and clean up your list.

Way B: When the package can’t be removed

$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo aptitude download PACKAGE
$ sudo dpkg --unpack ./PACKAGE_VERSION.deb
$ sudo dpkg --configure PACKAGE

Cheers

One of the main pillars of the Distribution Linux Mint past away. Mats Geier aka “Husse” was the last 3 years moderator on the Linux Mint Forum and the IRC help channel. And I would say, he was the most friendly and charming I ever knew in my life. He replied to all questions with knowledge, wisdom and charm.

The Linux Mint Developers same as the Linux Mint Community and all people who know “Husse” will deeply miss him. My deepest condolences also to his family, we will never forget.

This is a sad day for all of us.

*edit* P.S. I support current ideas (thanks to Rovanion for correction) to honor “Husse” in the upcoming release Linux Mint 9 Isadora. If you do so, visit Linux Mint Forum and sign or tell your thoughts. Regards

The Ubuntu Artwork Team released their total redesign of Ubuntu’s artwork.

The new design should reflect Ubuntu’s…

Precision. We ship high quality software, and we ship it exactly on schedule. Our Debian heritage means that the individual components of our platform are tightly defined and neatly arranged. There is no excess, no fat, and no waste in Ubuntu. We are a community that thrives on delivery.

Reliability. We are building Ubuntu for serious use. Whether it is being deployed on the desktop or in the cloud, we care that Ubuntu is secure, reliable and predictable. We deliver updates to Ubuntu that are rigorously tested. When we make a mistake, we learn from it and put in place good processes to ensure that it does not happen again.

Collaboration. Ubuntu is the result of collaborative work between thousands of people, and it is both the beneficiary and the public face of the collaborative work of *tens* of thousands of free software developers who build individual upstream components, or aggregate them in Debian. We go to great lengths to ensure that anybody, anywhere, who is passionate about Ubuntu and competent to participate, can do so. We enable virtual participation in our physical Ubuntu Developer Summits, we use mailing lists and IRC in preference to over-the-cubicle-wall communications, and we welcome contributions from both companies and individuals. Our governance bodies reflect the diversity of that participation, and leadership or permissions are based on proven merit, not corporate employment.

Freedom. We strive to deliver the very best free software platform. Our highest mission is to accelerate the adoption and spread of free software, to make it the de facto standard way that people build and consume software. We celebrate the work of other groups committed to collaborative content development, and open content licensing. While we are pragmatic about this (we ship proprietary drivers when we believe they are a requirement to get free software working well on PC’s) we expressly do not include any proprietary applications in the default installation of Ubuntu. We want people to love and appreciate free software, and even though we work to make sure that Ubuntu is compatible with, certified with and iteroperable with popular proprietary software, we do so to facilitate the adoption of free alternatives to proprietary solutions.

Yet I am not toally convinced, tested it out in my Lucid Alpha. I guess it is like children gettin grown and you live hard with see them leaving one day I got used to the old design, maybe I will learn to love the new one

The new bootloader theme for plymouth I really like I must admit
